About

I have been dragged to galleries and museums since I was old enough to walk, which instilled in me a passion for the visual culture of not only Britain but everyone. All of us, everywhere, and how wildly it varies, just as humanity varies wildly. Now the tables have turned and I am the one doing the dragging. So more often than not, however, it is just me, thinking about

- the space
- the things on the walls,
- everyone else in the room and how they respond
- the narratives and the stories and the interpretation we are being given.

That's in addition to the objects, of course, which themselves can be incredibly interesting. But sometimes they are overshadowed by the extraordinary choices, buildings, and stories which surround them. I enjoy analysing these things; they matter to me, because they narrate our development as a species. Big claims for what's really just stuff on walls (the original name for this blog). 

My work

In the real world I do several things: 
- I'm a theatre producer and venue manager-in-waiting, while I co-create a brand new fringe theatre space for Sheffield with Only Lucky Dogs Theatre. 
- I'm a digital marketer, putting my unfortunate Gen Z birthdate to good use creating content for Instagram (among other platforms). 
- I'm a visitor assistant in a museum (which I've left nameless, but you don't need a lot of detective work to figure it out). 
- I'm also a graduate of the University of Sheffield, twice, with a BA in History and an MA in Historical Research. I spent a lot of time over the four years I was at Sheffield reading about colonialism, indigeneity, empire and its nature, and museums. You might be sensing a theme here. 
- I write, when I can, putting my work wherever is keen to have it. I usually write about the arts and culture industries as they continue to change and re-form, especially in the wake of coronavirus. 

Each post explores, or starts with me wanting to explore, a theme I've been thinking about in the world of visual culture. It might be a review of an exhibition or something a bit more nebulous. However you arrived at this point, I hope you enjoy what you read.
